Sometimes, you’re able to mother and care for your home during a season of rest. Maybe you’ve slowed down your schedule to welcome a newborn into your family. You may be forced into a more restful schedule because of sickness – either yours or someone in your family. Or, maybe you’ve chosen to slow down and enjoy family life.

Other times, though, you are on.the.go. Life is hectic and busy. And as you’re navigating your schedule and caring for your family, it can be hard to cram in homemaking, too. Especially if you’re not home much.

From one on the go mom to another, here are five tips to help with homemaking during your busy season:

1. Find a system that works for you.

Homemaking systems aren’t exactly a strength of mine. When I notice other moms’ organized charts and daily schedules, sometimes I feel inadequate. But instead of inadequate, I need to remind myself that it’s more of a personality difference.

I do have my own homemaking system – it just happens to be relaxed and automatic. I make my bed after I get up each morning. I wash dishes after each meal. I make sure I wash and dry one load of laundry a day. And I pick up around the house each afternoon.

You may be ultra-organized – or not. It doesn’t really matter. What does matter is you find some sort of basic daily homemaking routine that you can stick to, however simple or complex as you like, then stick to it.

2. Know when you can do some deep cleaning.

Depending on your schedule, you may be able to fit in a bit of deep cleaning every day. Or, maybe you need to wait for once a week.

Whenever it is, make sure you do it. Your home will be more manageable – and you’ll have less to clean – if you try to deep clean your bathroom weekly. Vacuuming or sweeping the floors also is a good weekly chore (if you share your home with shedding animals or crawling infants, daily sweeping may be necessary).

Choose what deep cleaning chores are most needed in your own home, and plan on a time to do it.

3. Delegate some of the housework.

As long as your family members are old enough, start delegating the housework so you don’t have to do everything on your own. Get your spouse and children in on the work – it will be good for them to pitch in, since it’s their home, too.

Or, if you’re really busy and have the extra money, hire someone else to do some of your housework.

4. Relax your expectations.

When you’re in a busy season, something has to give. You may need to sacrifice long nights of sleep, frequent visits with family or friends … or a sparkling clean home.

Unless you’ve adopted a minimalistic lifestyle, chances are your home is filled with stuff – and stuff has a funny way of spreading when you’re busy.  It’s hard to keep everything in order when you’re rushing to get supper on the table and rush out the door.

When you know you’ll be gone more than you’ll be at home, forget about perfect and expect a messier home.

5. Try to make the most of your time at home.

When you’re on the go, the last thing you want to do is come home and focus on housework. Do what you can when you can, but be sure to take some time to relax – and enjoy your family.

When life is hectic and busy, the biggest thing to remember is to give yourself grace. Do what you can in the space of each day – and try to make wise and practical plans – but don’t expect the impossible. Navigating your schedule and caring for your family is most important – eventually you’ll find a way to fit in your homemaking as you’re on the go.
